So I did some research into the problem and then called &lt;a href="http://bhphotovideo.com"&gt;B&amp;H Photo Video&lt;/a&gt; in New York. They suggested I buy a $200 &lt;a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&amp;A=details&amp;Q=&amp;sku=266176&amp;is=REG&amp;addedTroughType=search"&gt;Audio Technica Microphone (Model AT899)&lt;/a&gt;, which has an XLR connection.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To connect it to the mini jack on my Canon ZR500 camcorder they suggested I buy the &lt;a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=details_accessories&amp;A=details&amp;Q=&amp;sku=423360&amp;is=REG&amp;addedTroughType=accessory_detail&amp;addedTroughValue=266176_REG"&gt;Hosa Line-Matching Transformer (MIT-156)&lt;/a&gt; for $20.  I followed their suggestions and am very pleased with what I bought. Hopefully I'll leave all the humming and buzzing noise problems behind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are scans of the packaging for these products. Click on any of the graphics to view a larger size version of it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My only gripe is that the length of the cable on this microphone is only 10 feet long. 12 or 15 feet would have been more appropriate. B&amp;H Photo Video tell me I can buy a longer cable if I'd like.
